Prescott unfolds as a wonderfully historic town off the beaten path in North Central Arizona. It resides roughly halfway between Phoenix and Flagstaff. It also appears in proximity to Sedona, another main attraction of the region.
Prescott AZ was founded in the mid 1800′s. At that time, it became the territorial capital of Arizona. Prescott received its name in honor of William Hickling Prescott, a well-known author of the time. Prescott also took on the distinction as county seat of Yavapai County. For sometime Prescott remained the capital of Arizona until Phoenix became the choice as capital in the late 1800′s. In Prescott’s hay day as the dominant political center of the Territory, it was protected by nearby Fort Whipple.
Mining took place around
Prescott and contributed a good percentage to the town’s economy. The mining industry had its ups and downs though, and slumped. The town received a boost in its economy with the introduction of the cattle industry in the area. A railway was also opened connecting
Prescott, Arizona with other main hubs across the country. The railway lent growth the the town’s economy, accommodating establishments of merchants with a focus on certain staples and mining supplies.
With the improved transportation and economic confidence came electric lights and telephones. Prescott was on course for continued growth and prosperity. As a result, residences grew in a variety of popular styles at the time. In Prescott today, you can still see some evidence of these Victorian, Queen Anne and other architectural influences. In fact, historic remnants make up some of the singular charm of the present-day town. Unfortunately a good part of Prescott’s unique character from its early development was destroyed in a fire.
Prescott, Arizona rose to the occasion and succeeded in replacing wooden building common in downtown with concrete, brick and stone structures.
The fire provided another hidden blessing by spurring the community to make more improvements. It added social and public features that included sidewalks and paved streets. New styles in
Prescott homes were introduced too, and residential neighborhoods grew, and grew….

Prescott AZ represents one of
the most charming of towns in
